We were recently appointed to carry out a heavy reduction on a Sycamore tree in a churchyard. The tree had been identified as having basal decay so by reducing the weight and spread of the canopy, structural stability is increased, reducing the risk of failure. Sometimes we need to include the use of a MEWP in our working methods. This could be down to safety or efficiency reasons. Maybe the trees are diseased or dying, meaning climbing would be dangerous or difficult, or maybe there are a number of trees to be worked on and climbing would dramatically increase the amount of time required to complete the job. Next time you’re out on a walk, take a look at the leaves on any Holly you come across. We spotted these two types of leaves on the same tree whilst out walking recently. The smooth edged leaves were much higher up on the tree and the prickly ones lower down. These variations within a single tree are the result of herbivore activity and molecular responses to environmental change ie prickly leaves grow where animals browse, to try to limit future damage. #heterophyllous #methylation #adaptability #amazingnature

Can you spot the Oak holding onto its Autumn colou

Can you spot the Oak holding onto its Autumn coloured leaves? Not necessarily a sign of poor health but a natural phenomena called marcescence. An incomplete corky layer (abscission zone) prevents the leaves detaching from the tree and they cling on until new growth forces them to drop in the Spring. Most commonly seen in Beech, Oak and Hornbeam. #everciduoustrees #autumncolour #quercus #fagus #carpinus
